Alexa.com just ranked this website to be the
373,861 st most important website in the world… which is
very, very cool… then I got to thinking.
You probably want to know how I did it or what you can do to
increase your website’s popularity index too.
Increasing mine began with having Alex Jeffreys remind me of
the importance of creating a WordPress blog… of value.
Then along came a wonderful friend named Joann Henry, who
was kind enough to share her experience with a great little
add-on program…
Quite simply, once you install this Firefox add-on there will
appear a small little graph, bar and number that tells you your Traffic Trend,
Global Reach and of course your all important Traffic Rank… in your
browser’s right corner.
The add-on is called Sparky.
The real cool thing about Sparky is that it actually shows all these
values for every website you visit in real-time… not just yours.
Here is a list of a few things I’ve done to watch my Alexa ranking
plummet to where you see it now…
1. created interesting blog posts,
2. used curiosity based headlines,
3. tagged my posts,
4. talked about authority sites in my posts,
5. put the WP top commentators list in my sidebar,
6. installed the WP comment luv plugin,
7. used the Yahoo mybloglog sidebar widget,
8. visited other people’s blogs and left comments,
9. replied to people’s comments on my blog,
10. made sure there were external links in all my posts,
I’m not really sure which has impacted my Alexa ranking
dropping more than the other… but I’m glad it has
had the combined effect I’ve always been looking for.
If you want to see your blog become more popular with the
search engines and to those that surf the web, install Sparky
Then visit people’s blogs with a lower Alexa ranking than yours, try
to figure out why they’re more appealing… then copy what you think
they’re doing.
Positive results will surely come your way.
If you really want your traffic to increase in
the next 24 hours, this will work… GUARANTEED.
Step 1 – install Sparky
http://www.alexa.com/toolbar/
Step 2 – click on any blog post at any WordPress blog
website then scroll down to where you see people that have
placed comments on any blog posts,
Step 3 – click back through the URL links of at least
10 commentators back to their blog websites,
Step 4 – read any of their most current blog posts and
place a comment either thanking them for: their
information, how it has positively affected you, or
something else that’s POSITIVE.
Step 5 – its likely that a few will take the time
to visit your blog and leave a comment too.
Step 6 – approve their comments,
Step 7 – look at your new Alexa ranking… it should be
lower than before.
Have a great day, get Sparky and make sure you
leave a comment here so everyone reading this blog
post can jump over to your blog and leave a comment there too.
In case you didn’t know, every time someone
comments on your blog and you approve their comments…
you get a backlink…
The more backlinks… the more popular you become.
So start right now…
You’ll be surprised at what happens in the next 24 hours with
your world wide web blog website’s popularity.
Let me know how it goes,
Rob
P.S. A more popular blog means much more traffic and
to get a better Alexa.com ranking this Firefox add-on will
encourage your progress… all along the way.
Hey Alan,
Glad you liked the post. Yep, Alexa sparky is a great tool to show you where you stand and
comment luv… well you know its just one of those things I really luv – lol

Where is home for you… I see you’re in the EST time zone.

Hi Rob,
I came back to see how you responded to my comment. I took your advice and implemented 2 out of your 3 suggestions so far.
I will keep increasing the number of top commentators showing as I get more comments. Right now I have 4 showing and will be increasing the number to 5 very soon.
I now also show 10 fellow students links using the widget you mentioned.
Your Alexa ranking is now at 303,038. Great job. You clearly know what you’re doing.
I will come back and check your other posts and videos within days.
Thank you for being so helpful.

Sounds like things are going well. Keep up the great work at your blog.
Just curious, you have a very cool name. What is the origin of Sova.

Hi Rob,
It definitely looks like this technique (and probably many more) are paying off ten-fold, simply judging the amount of comments you’ve been receiving on your posts!
After reading this post I looked up my Alexa rank, and it’s not so impressive (I’ll let you look it up if you’re so inclined). Your Alexa rank will be the largest motivator for me right now, just knowing that it is possible to beat out most other sites online.
I’ll let you know once I cut my Alexa rank in half!
Thank so much, Rob!

Joe,
Yep, a good Alexa ranking is helpful and I’m glad you found my post helpful.
But at the end of the day its about income and list size…
Again congrats on the marriage.

Rob,
I commented on this blog post before, but I just wanted to come back and tell you how useful I have found adding the alexa add-on. Just doing what you have said, my alexa rating has dropped by over 20,000 in just three days! More importantly to me, it has made me highly motivated! It seems to change around 9pm EST and every night I get such a kick out of seeing what my rating is now based on what I have done over the past day or two. Thank you so much! -Norene

Norene,
Yep, love the Alexa ranking thing… Just to let you know Alexa, says they update this to outside services about 3 days behind.
So if you go to Alexa.com and put in your url and see they don’t match up its because of the time lag.
Did you see my latest blog post on my home page http://www.escapetoprosperity.com
Hope you like the video.
Cheers,
Rob
Hey Rob,
Great post on Alexa rankings. I like the fact that “dropping like a rock” is a good thing in the case of Alexa Rankings. Very clever.:)
Also appreciate the link to “Sparky”. I’ve just now downloaded and installed it. Interesting tool.
I have no doubt your ranking will continue to drop! :>)
Best Regards,

Hi Rob,
This post and everyone’s comments are so helpful, I am going to print these pages out. Tags, Keyword Luv, links, good headlines. This is all very helpful information for me.
I just had Headspace2 and Google Sitemaps creator installed on my blog. So moving forward, over time, I am going to see if this will generate more traffic for me.
I think my blog has too many opt-ins, which makes it a bit garish. This just occured to me the other day. Rob, can you give me your advice?
I appreciate your help,
Karen
Hey Karen,
Just sent you a personal email about this.
Cheers,
Rob
Hey Rob,
I just installed “Sparky” and it’s pretty cool.
I’ve done most of what you say here but there
are a few very good points you make that I don’t
do. I will start doing them and see if my Alexa
rank drops. It sits at 425,323 as I write this.
Here’s another tool that I use. It’s called SeoQuake.
You can check it out here. http://seoquake.com/
It’s a toolbar that will tell you your Alexa rank and
your Google page rank and much more.
You wrote the following in this post.
“In case you didn’t know, every time someone
comments on your blog and you approve their comments…
you get a backlink…”
I have to disagree with that statement. By default
Wordpress puts the “NoFollow” attribute in your
comments so you don’t get a backlink. If you want
to give some link juice to your commentators you
have to remove the nofollow attribute that WordPress
so kindly puts in for you.
I have what is called a “DoFollow” blog because I’ve
installed the DoFollow WordPress plug-in. If you want
to give it a try download it here.
http://www.semiologic.com/software/dofollow/
There’s a lot of controversy about this plug-in because
some will say you will get more spam but I don’t seem to
get any more spam now than I did before I installed it
about 9 months ago.
BTW, I don’t like putting links in my comments but don’t
worry I’m not affiliated in any way with these links.
Later,
Jeff Sargent
.-= Jeff Sargenet´s last blog ..Are You Frustrated Because You Keep Failing? =-.
Hey Jeff,
Thanks for that. Its funny how I just miss things sometimes… Denis who owns semiologic, had lunch together last time I was in NYC.
Speak soon,
Rob
Hey Rob,
In the comment I left just above this one I must
have stuttered with my fingers as my name is spelled
wrong. It’s Sargent not Sargenet. Pretty bad when you
can’t even spell your own name.
I tell you this because now I’m listed twice in your
Top Commentators listing on the side of your blog. If
it’s not too much trouble could you edit my name and
spell it “Sargent”.
Thanks,
Jeff Sargent

Your blog is so cool. You just seem to have it all together. And you show up everywhere. That’s the way to do it!!!
You must spend at least 18 hours a day doing your blogging. There is so much that I can learn from you. I just wish I had as many hours that I could devote to this…oh, did you say we all have the same number of hours in each day? Hmmmm..
By the way, your Alexa ranking is now 241,664. Way to drop like a rock!! It dropped 61,374 in just over a week!
I’ll be back to see what else you are up to.

Go out and make it a successful day!
Hey Rob,
When you made this post your Alexa ranking was 373,000, as of
tonite 09/28/2009 it was 175,726 WOW.
that’s quite an accomplishment for you, congratulations.
Your seminar was great last week as well.
I have so many things going on, I really need to focus
What do you think is the one thing you did, to make your blog
so successful ?.

Rich,
Yep, it seems to be dropping. All I did was provide such great blog posts, that when others would visit me they were very interested in leaving a comment such as you have.
But I’ve also set a personal goal to get 250 comments on one single blog post… And so goals help a whole lot too.
Cheers,
Rob
Rob:
Good info.
Here are two additional ways to greatly improve your
Alexa rank:
-1- Make guest blog posts on blogs with good Alexa ranking
-2- If your content is related to Internet marketing submit
each post to Internet Marketing News Watch:
IMNewsWatch.com

Hi Rob
I have been watching my alexa ranking. It certainly isn’t what yours is, but is slowly dropping. Thanks for all the ideas how how to make it drop faster. I have really just been typing posts, but now I am going to pay more attention to putting external links in all my posts and tagging and talking about autority sites in my posts.
Thanks again for the tips!
