  2. Garry Parkes says:

    Great stuff Rob,

Certainly a very useful post for all the fellow students :-)

I’ve just done my first update of the database so that real students blogs will now appear on the Blogroll.

Wish the widegt was available on the first Coaching Program as it took me an age to add all the students to my Blogroll.

Over 300+ I think I still on my now from the first program :-)

    Garry

  3. Hey Rob, long time no talk. :-) Glad to see you’re in Alex’s coaching program as well.

Great step-by-step tutorial on installing the plugin!

    Cheers,

    Alan

  4. Matt Wolfe says:

Great tutorial. For whatever reason the widget isn’t working on my site. I have it all installed properly. But it just shows my title in the sidebar without listing any links underneath it. Any idea why this might happen? You can check out my blog if you want and see what I’m talking about.

  5. Hey Rob

Thats exactly the sort of instructions you need for a newbie,I will be heading over to you for more help in the future

    cheers

    mARCUS

  6. I forgot to say are you really good at wordpress?? I found your step by steps so easy to follow.

I have a few issues I am worried about.

Should I upgrade to wordpress 2.8 from 2.7

What do you do to back up your blog I have a plugin but how does it work?

Also my marcuspassey.com is an add on domain should I make it my main domain??

pop over to my blog if you have the answers my friend??

    cheers

    marcus

  7. Rob Canyon says:

    Matt,

I had a quick look at your blog… Looks great.

Since I see you’ve been running it for a while, I’m wondering if you’re possibly running an older version of WordPress.

Not that its bad, but if it is older it may be that your version doesn’t allow for dynamic communication with an outside server.

BTW the names and underlying web urls reside on Alex Jeffreys server and the widlink widget just pulls back relative information each time someone visits your blog.

    So here’s what to do…

If you have another domain to play around with, try loading the latest wordpress version. Load the widget and see if it works.

    and/or

send an email to Garry Parkes or support and see if the widget is supported by your version of wordpress.

this should lead you to a decision on what to do.

    Hope that helps,

    Rob

  8. Rob Canyon says:

    Hey Marcus,

Glad to help with the Widlink Widget issue.

Regarding your other questions. I’ll try to answer them but I’m not a WordPress blogmeister… Just trying to help…

    you said,
Should I upgrade to wordpress 2.8 from 2.7
    my reply,
Don’t really know, but I did and it seems to be working just fine,

    you said,
What do you do to back up your blog I have a plugin but how does it work?
    my reply,
send me the name of your backup plugin and I’ll let you know what to do

    you said
Also my marcuspassey.com is an add on domain should I make it my main domain??
    my reply,
my escapetoprosperity.com is an add on domain and it works just
fine… I find it much better controlling multiple domains as add on domains so in my opinion you’ve got it where I put mine and so there should be no reason to move it,

    Cheers,

    Rob

  9. Matt Wolfe says:

    Hey Rob,
Thanks for the response. I am running the most recent version of WordPress. My blog is actually only 8 days old. :) I just post a lot. I know Joe Fier at http://www.joefier.com is experiencing the same problem and when I checked, he was running the most current version as well.

I’ve e-mailed Garry and he was going to get in contact with the developer.

    Thanks for the help!

  22. John Tanner says:

    Hi Rob,

I see you\’ve created a specific post for myself on how to change the url from /blog back to the root directory. I didn\’t actually see this post and followed a very long winded process of manually deleting files and recreating through the cPanel.

However, The AJ forum posting still told people that my blog posting was on /blog. You took the trouble to notice this and provide me with a solution o redirect traffic back to my home page (even if they had entered the old url).

Your instructions were easy to follow and they worked.

Thanks for showing an interest and resolving my problem

    Johnny T

  23. John Tanner says:

Just followed the instructions to add images to other peoples sites. Now I’ve created a Gravatar image hopefully my picure will show up.

Thanks for the tip …. Johnny T

  24. Rob Canyon says:

    John,

Looks like you got the your picture at gravatar.com all set up and I’m glad the redirect instructions and file I sent you have worked perfectly.

Any time you have a question don’t hesitate to ask. I’m no expert, just have learned a couple things…

Can’t wait to be at Alex Jeffreys Coaching class tomorrow night.

    See you there…

    Rob

  25. Rob Canyon says:

    John,

I received your email. And Never worry about troubling me… I love to help when I can.

Regarding your current issue… You need to login to your website at http://one-johntanner.com/wp-admin
and scroll down the left column to where you see ‘Comments’ and click on that.

Then, hover over the comment you want to edit and you’ll see
Approve | Spam | Delete | Edit | Quick Edit | Reply just below the comment.

Click on ‘Edit’ and then you should be able to do what you want. Once you change your email to what you set up at gravatars.com your picture will show.

    Cheers,
    Rob

P.S. this is a new blog post that may be of interest to you… let me know if it helps.

  28. Hi Rob,

Thanks for these tips. I’ve had a quick scan through them and I’m sure they’re going to be really useful to me – as I’ve only just started my own blog.

I didn’t realise how many hoops you have to jump through to get everything right.

As I’m also an Alex Jeffereys student, I’m very interested in trying to get this ‘Widlink’ widget up and running!

    Thanks again Rob.

    Andrew Vaughan

And you’re picture’s coming through mighty fine… so congrats on making it show.

  33. Jim Hardin says:

    Rob
Thanks for the step by step process to setting the picture up. I finally got it. I was able go to the site and upload a picture no problem. Then I went back to my blog and clicked display avatars, but it didn’t display. I thought I must be an idiot it seems easy why won’t it display. Well after swearing a bit trying to figure out what was wrong I figured out that in my user profile on my blog my email address was incorrect. Once I went in to my user profile and put in the correct email address (the email address that I used on the gravatar site) presto my picture came up. Again thanks for the help!

  34. Joann Henry says:

    Hi Rob,
WOW, you really are a lifesaver for ‘people like me’. After you pointed me in the direction of the widget, I was good to go. Not all of us are quite as experienced with technical things & you provide concise, step-by-step instructions. I truly appreciate your help-THANK YOU!
    Joann

  35. Rob Canyon says:

    Joann,

I’m glad you’ve been able to get this very awesome ‘Free Traffic’ Widlink widget AJ’s team has provided up and running.

And thanks for your comments about my technical strengths. But really I’m not as saavy as you think… I just like trying to help those I can and without clear step by step instructions I’d only make matters worse.

Glad to have helped, come back soon,

    Rob

    Thanks again, Rob!
